This set of drawings started as a form of escape. They are romantic drawings based on memories of steep canyon walls and slopes of scree in the canyons of Northern Utah. They are a refusal to stay in the present. I have recreated the landforms in impossible colors and perhaps physically impossible structures. Drawing in a linear method the structures end up both weighty and weightless.
Through the drawing process I realized that what I was drawing were geological narratives documenting rarely seen events and their consequences. My method of drawing the scree is very similar to handwriting. This thought led to inserting text into the scree and ultimately (as seen in the Rockfall and Signs & Symbols Series sculptures) turning the rocks themselves into language.
