In Family of Danes I selected a wistfully romantic phrase from a family history written about my Danish ancestors and using water with a touch of black watercolor I brushed each word on a separate cracked stone around Hirsholm Island. Photographing each stone/word not only produced a portrait of the island, but it also became about my effort to use a fragment of a story of my Danish past to form a tenuous connection and understanding with an unknown environment.
